AN expert in rural economic affairs from Hatherleigh spoke on the effects of the foot and mouth crisis at the Exeter Diocesan Synod yesterday (Wednesday).
Michael Winter, a professor of rural economy and society at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education, examined the social impact of the crisis on farmers, the supply chain and tourism businesses.
The impact on the medical profession, other support networks, vets, slaughter teams, MAFF officials, children and schooling was also examined.
The Synod was also due to consider the future for rural Devon in the wake of foot and mouth disease, including the church's role, food marketing and green tourism.
