MOVES to curb speeding are about to step up a gear in Callington and Gunnislake with the introduction of a community speedwatch scheme involving the public.
The police have now secured the funding for camera equipment to target problem areas and want the community to get on board.
Volunteers are being sought to help police monitor locations which have been highlighted by parish councils and local residents as speeding blackspots.
They will be trained to use the speed guns and gain evidence purely for monitoring purposes.
Sgt Brett Philips, of Callington Police, said: 'Community speedwatch is not about enforcement, it is about monitoring areas which have been the subject of complaints, and providing data.
'If we find there is a problem the police will target individuals who are persistently speeding.'
Public meetings are to be held in Callington and Gunnislake to inform local people about the project and recruit volunteers.
Police Community Support Officer for Callington Mark Stribley, said two speed monitoring devices were now available to use.
'What we are asking people to get involved with is an information gathering exercise in the same way that surveys are done to monitor traffic levels,' said PCSO Stribley.
'Once a particular hotspot is identified we ask volunteers to record registration numbers of vehicles where drivers are travelling at excessive speeds.
'Initially, these people will be sent a letter detailing their speed on what day and at what time as a warning.
'If the problem persists, a police operation will follow, carried out by the local police or traffic officers, and enforcement action will be taken.
PCSO Stribley said police would use a radar gun and issue on-the-spot fines — but he hoped community speedwatch would act as a deterrent.
He said community speedwatch had been running in Bude where it had been very successful.
The next step will be to set up School Speedwatch where speeding motorists will be given the option of 'getting grilled' by local schoolchildren or accept an on-the-spot fine.
