I HAVE been asked to write regarding the letter from Mrs Joan Calmady-Hamlyn (March 7) and Mr Gill's letter the following week, regarding the speed limit at Vale Down.

In approximately 450 yards from the Fox and Hounds there are 20 houses, ie an average of one per 24 yards. Quite 'substantial' for what used to be a quiet country road.

The human occupants range from children up to the very elderly. There are also horses, cats and dogs. All are entitled to protection against speedsters. None of us living here, therefore, understand 'mistakenly gives a 40-mph speed limit'.

In the space of 12 months three vehicles have smashed into one 100ft length of wall, causing extensive damage. In the same period three different vehicles went off the road onto the property opposite. On the next stretch of road, within the limit, one death. That does not count the numerous near misses.

We now have the protection of the speed limit. We are asking the police to enforce that more rigorously. We are delighted that Mrs Calmady-Hamlyn obeys the limit. We trust that she reports those who overtake her where there is an unbroken white line — a common occurrence.
