A TAVISTOCK Rotarian has been presented with a special award in recognition of his work within the community.

Rotary district governor John Pearce presented a service above self award to Tavistock Rotarian Tony Everitt at a gathering of Devon and Cornwall Rotary Clubs recently.

The award recognises Totarians who have demonstrated initiative and drive to implement key projects within their communities.

Tony was given his for his inspiration and energy in setting up the Tavistock Work Club, which helps unemployed local people with writing CVs and preparing job applications — a function no longer provided by Job Centre Plus.

The weekly sessions, held at Tavistock Library from 2pm to 4pm each Tuesday, attract between five and ten people. Some have found employment and in at least one case an internship.

The work club, still in its first year, was developed with the library providing its meeting room, which is used for computer training and other outreach activities, and Rotarians providing expertise on interviews, CV writing and job hunting ideas.

Tavistock club president Clive Fairchild said: 'Tony had done an excellent job developing the work club over the last nine months and we look forward to it helping more unemployed people in the future.

'There have also been approaches from other Devon Rotary clubs, keen to start similar projects.'
