THE groundsman for Yelverton?s War Memorial pitch has been presented with a prestigious award. Steve Lyndon was awarded a silver engraved plate after being named the amateur football clubs? South West Groundsman of the Year 2007 for his ?outstanding work? on the football pitch. Steve has been groundsman at the field for ten years, during which time he has had the responsibility for the grounds, borders and general maintenance of the field. Steve is the chairman of Wessex Lopes Arms Rangers, a team which has been playing in Yelverton for 40 years. During the winter months he cares for the pitch and in the summer he cares for the whole ground for the Yelverton War Memorial Hall and Field Committee. Maureen Crosbie, hall chairman, said: ?Steve is one of the most enthusiastic and charming members of our team. ?He realises how important sport is in the lives of the young people today and is the manager of Wessex Rangers who play on our field. ?His encouragement and leadership are vital to the young footballers and is an example of the positive powers of leadership. In the opinion of the hall committee he is most deserving of this award.?
