ONE of West Devon's smallest but most notable landmarks has been sold for an undisclosed sum.

The Pimple on Whitchurch Down is a three-sided folly with views over the surrounding countryside. Offers exceeding £10,000 were invited for the Grade II listed building, built by famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1914.

Neil Woolcock, of Ward and Chowen estate agents, said: 'We have accepted an offer for the Pimple from a private individual who is very keen to maintain it as it is.'

He added that the vendors were pleased with the result as the final price exceeded their expectations.

The Pimple gets its name because of the finial, or stone apex, at the top of the roof. It stands on a mound, its three walls measuring 13ft, and is constructed of Hurdwick stone with a slate roof. Wooden benches are set into the wall.
