REGARDING recent correspondence on the right way to pronounce 'Morwellham', it would be interesting to know how those with strong views on the subject say 'Nottingham'. Not, I'll be bound, like Kevin Costner's Robin Hood, who according to Sir Terry Wogan disembarks from France with the cry 'Saddle up men, for tonight we feast at Notting-HAM'!
Accentuating the last syllable is the Americanism, not the other way round surely, and I can't somehow imagine anyone with a Devonshire dialect getting their tonsils around Morwell-HAM. No — them sooner call old place Morwellum oi reckon, wouldn't un m'dears.
