Duchy division two

St Newlyn East 4

Calstock 3

Calstock travelled to top of the table St Newlyn East this week where they were unfortunate not to return home with a point.

Throughout the first half both teams had an equal amount of possession, however Calstock were first on the score sheet through Ross Lavers with a splendid lob from 30 yards out catching the keeper off his line.

Both teams came out for the second half battling hard in midfield and it was St Newlyn East who was to score next through a header. Calstock continued to pressure the opposition defence, substitute Barry Hemmett crossed in a lovely ball from the right allowing the ball to be powerfully headed home by Shane Richards giving Calstock the lead.

St Newlyn East responded and forcing a free kick deep in the Calstock half, they made the most of this opportunity and equalised for a second time.

The home side for the first time of the game got their noses in front when the ball was swung in and volleyed home and within quick succession the hosts scored again late in the second half to make it 4-2.

Calstock did not let their heads drop and continued to go forward —forcing the hosts to concede a penalty after bringing down Lavers in the box. Darren Benfield stepped up and smashed the penalty into the back of the net.

In the dying minutes Lavers came close to getting the equaliser after hitting the wood work. Unfortunately Calstock were unable to get the equaliser and final score was 4-3 to the hosts. Man of the match went to Calstock's Paul Cottingham who put in a solid performance in defence.
