OKEHAMPTON Rotary Club is helping to spearhead the challenge to find the best young driver in the county following a successful pilot scheme in Barnstaple last year. The Young Drivers Award is a test of the motoring skills of drivers aged between 18 and 25, which this year will be held at Westpoint, Exeter, on Saturday, October 6. The event is co-hosted in co-operation with Devon County Council road safety team, the Institute of Advanced Motorists, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Acccidents and the Pavey Insurance Group. Drivers will be tested on a variety of skills including manoeuvrability, a 20 minute drive over a pre-determined course and a theory test. The winner will receive up to £1,000 worth of motoring insurance and Halfords of Torquay are offering a satellite navigation system as second prize. There is also a Skills for Life voucher and skid pan control course by the Devon Drivers? Centre and £179 car service by Kwik Fit in one of their Devon branches to be won. Okehampton Rotary Club president Kay Bickley said: ?We have been concerned by the appalling death toll and injury from accidents recently involving young drivers and want to do all we can to help drivers have a better understanding of the driving skills needed on today?s roads.? Any young driver who thinks he or she is good enough can enter by registering before September 30 by going online at http://www.rotary1170.org">www.rotary1170.org
