FIVE organisations in the Tavistock area are set to benefit from the latest round of Awards for All grants with projects ranging from a hospital garden to one involving musicians and artists.
Tavistock Hospital will have a patio for the benefit of patients, visitors and staff following a grant of £5,000 to South Hams and West Devon NHS Primary Care Trust.
Locality manager at the hospital, Philippa Bridle, said work had already been carried out on the garden and the area for the patio had been tidied up at a working weekend a few weeks ago. It was hoped work would start on the patio in the autumn.
'The idea is that we do it this year, and it will be called the Golden Jubilee Garden,' she said.
Many fundraising events have already been held to raise more money, including the recent bed-push. 'It's been a real community project,' Ms Bridle added.
Bere Alston Primary School has been awarded £1,012 to buy athletic equipment and provide first aid training and coaching.
Neighbouring village Bere Ferrers will receive £2,554 for the installation of two swings in the play area of the still-developing playing field.
The sum of £4,930, granted to Lewdown and District Youth Club, will go towards a project for young people to explore their natural surroundings and work with musicians and artists to create workpieces on this theme.
Football in Lifton is set to take a step forward following the local team's award of £2,000.
Club secretary the Rev Andrew Prout said the money would be used to fund a football programme for children and young people in the village.
'For a group like ours this is a large sum of money. The grant will help to pay for the equipment needed, including goalposts and kit, as well as training. It will put our football club at the heart of the community,' he said.
It is hoped that in the long term some of the young players will go on to play for the senior team. But for now, the club has entered two youth teams in the mini soccer Kingsley Youth League.
