YELVERTON Tennis Club held its autumn tournament recently. Chairman Simon Murray organised the event using a round-robin system and some thrilling tennis and close matches were played. The winners with the most points were Dennis Jones and Rob Kamara. Dennis was persuaded out of retirement to play and the rest from tennis must have helped his game! The ladies winners were Joy Tynan and Janet Strelling. It was also pleasing to see so many juniors joining in and playing some excellent tennis. The club?s team supper was held at the Bird's Nest Restaurant in Tavistock to celebrate a reasonably successful season, with good weather and some excellent tennis. Vice-chairman Mary Downey gave a vote of thanks to team captains Ann Short and Phil Gasche, for all their hard work in producing five teams each week for ten weeks during the summer. The award for ladies team player of the season was won by Angie Lynch for her consistent play in the B team and helping out with the A team. The men?s team player was awarded to junior Greg Amman for his superb, competitive play throughout the season. Newcomer to the club Liz Parkes won the award for the most improved player of the season. Although she only played one match, she has improved her play so much that it is hoped she will become a regular team player next season. Autumn/winter tennis is still being played at the club at week-ends and a ladies doubles winter league is being considered for the next few months, depending on the numbers interested.
