A TAVISTOCK taxi firm have come up with a 'Smart' idea for people who wish to travel alone around town.
The idea of Solo, a new service from 4hiretaxis based in Vigo Bridge, is that instead of individuals getting into a vehicle with room for four or more passengers, they get into one with seats just for themselves and the driver.
The Solo Smart Car is, says the firm's owner Chris Panter, a more fuel-efficient and greener way to travel.
It is the latest addition to the companies fleet of mini-bus and four private hire cars.
Chris, 37, said: 'The Smart car is 'greener' than the normal vehicles we use as it produces less emissions into the atmosphere, it has a high level of fuel economy thus meaning it can be operated at a lower cost to us as operators which, in turn, means we can pass the savings onto the customers in a reduced local fare scheme.
Solo, says Chris, is especially ideal for elderly people who may wish to do their shopping in the town.
West Devon Borough Council have already licensed the vehicle as a private hire vehicle so the distinctive bright red Smart Car can already be seen on the roads of Tavistock.
The Solo driver is Barry Wright, 66, and calls are taken by cab controller Tara Baker.
Smart Private Hire, which cannot be hired from the town's taxi ranks, should be pre-booked and is available during weekdays; Chris said as it is a new service, it could be expanded during the day at weekends but that depends on demand.
