OFSTED inspectors have this week heaped praise on a West Devon primary school, highlighting many achievements and strengths.

Mary Tavy and Brentor Community Primary School is a good school which provides well for its pupils whatever their background or needs, according to the report published recently.

The report said: ?The school?s purposefulness, consistency and teamwork contribute to high standards of behaviour, thus allowing teaching and learning to flourish.?

The Ofsted inspectors, who visited the school in March, found pupils? social and moral development was fostered successfully, and a good range of extra-curricular activities helped them attain higher than expected standards in PE and music.

The teaching of Japanese offered to Year Five children was found to be excellent, and French tuition in Year Six was singled out as a major strength.

The report said the school makes good use of its resources and gives good value for money.

Parents and governors enjoy strong links with the school, with both making significant contributions to the standards obtained.

Management and leadership were highlighted as strengths.

The inspectors identified one area for improvement ? the provision for pupils in the foundation stage, which is in the process of being addressed.

Headteacher Nicky James said: ?I am really pleased that Ofsted has recognised the strengths and achievements of our school, which is a result of the excellent teamwork and dedication shown by staff, governors, pupils and parents.

?I am proud to be the headteacher of this wonderful, caring school.?
