SIR Ray Tindle, owner of the Times and former president and treasurer of the Newspaper Society, was named Personality of the Year for his lifetime achievement in the newspaper industry in the 2005 Newspaper Industry Awards at London?s Park Lane Hilton. The awards, organised by the society?s Production Journal magazine, were presented by Joanna Lumley and hosted by the Journal?s editor and publisher Gary Cullum. Sir Ray has been in the newspaper industry for 58 years, after more than three years in the wartime army. From only the £300 gratuity at the end of the war he has built up a group of 205 newspapers and ten radio stations. In 1973 he was appointed OBE for services to the industry, in 1987 appointed CBE and was knighted in 1994.
