THE weather played a major role in the opening games for Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowls Club last week. In a mixed match in cold and damp conditions the home club managed a win over Callington.
The ladies were not treated well by the weather, their matches had to be cancelled due to rain. The men met a similar fate in their league match against Plymstock, abandoned after seven ends.
The club celebrated Roger Bawden's first match as the president of Devon County Bowling Association with a match on his own green at Tavistock between the host club and a county select team.
Despite Roger's rink winning for the county the host club managed to win by 121 shots to 112. The Tavistock skips and their scores were as follows: S Doidge (29-22), M Allen (26-12), E Stevens (12-22), R Cooper (20-17), C Tremaine (16-21) and R Northam (18-18).
On Sunday the 12th and on the 19th the club is holding open days for anyone interested in taking up the game. Sessions will start at 10am and 2pm at the Meadows and continue during the day. Instruction will be given by club members, woods will be provided, anyone interested is asked to wear flat soled shoes. All are welcome, for further information contact Tony Coombs, club captain, on 612515.
