THE Alzheimer's Society is looking for a new 'Singing for the Brain' leader to run groups in the West and Mid Devon area.

Singing for the Brain is a group activity which has been carefully designed for all people with dementia and memory loss and their carers to receive the many health benefits that are woven into the fun of singing.

One in three people over 65 will die with dementia and the Alzheimer's Society research shows that 800,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia, more than half with Alzheimer's Disease.

Julia Lonnkvist, the dementia support manager for West Devon and South Hams, said: 'It is enjoyable, friendly and uplifting, giving many people a much-needed boost in confidence, all led by a trained singing leader, and supported by volunteers.

Interested candidates will need to have experience of running community singing groups.

'The Alzheimer's Society will provide the successful candidate with training to understand the service model and will provide a mentor singing leader to support their training.

'Singing leaders are self-employed sub-contract workers who will have their own insurance.'

A person living with dementia who attends a Singing for the Brain group said: 'I love to come and join in with others.

'I love the singing and I feel more positive in trying to deal with my dementia.'

Jo Taswell, services manager for the Alzheimer's Society, added: 'We are delighted with this service for local people living with dementia.

'Singing for the Brain can be a real lifeline and provide the opportunity to meet other people in a similar situation and share experiences, but most of all have fun!'

There are also a variety volunteering roles available, all of which are important and ensure the smooth running of the group.

Volunteers are especially needed to help set up, welcome people and clear away the room at the beginning and end of each session, and join in with the singing.

Out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
