AS summer approaches, it's time to get out those walking boots and enjoy the scenery Devon has to offer — all while helping to protect local children.
The NSPCC's annual walking challenge HACK (Hike Against Cruelty to Kids) in West Devon takes place on September 8, in association with GO Outdoor stores.
The 22-mile route will take walkers through attractive countryside, wooded river valleys and across open moorland.
There is also a shorter five-mile walk.
Local NSPCC community fundraising manager Alison Amer said: 'We are delighted to be working with GO Outdoors stores across the South West for our 2013 Devon HACK.
With the support from their customers and staff, even more walkers can join in the fun, which will hopefully mean we'll be able to raise even more money for children and families across the region.'
Sam Doel, chairman of the NSPCC Plymouth and West Devon Branch — one of the South West's most prolific volunteers for the NSPCC — is taking part in the event and came along to the launch event.
She said: 'Training for the HACK is a great way to start a keep fit campaign and taking part is an amazing challenge and experience.
'The HACK will be a fabulous day out in the great outdoors and a valuable opportunity to help the NSPCC raise money to support its projects and services across the UK, so why not think about taking part as a group of friends or maybe enter a corporate team?'
The HACK challenge can be great fun, but is hard work. The NSPCC recommends people who register undertake some training beforehand.
The terrain is very varied and the weather conditions can change quickly, so suitable walking boots, clothing and accessories, such as a rucksack, are recommended for all walkers. Look at the training tips section on the NSPCC website http://www.nspcc.org.uk/hack">www.nspcc.org.uk/hack for more information.
You can choose to register as an individual or a team and the NSPCC will provide you with lots of support to help you with your HACK, including a registration pack filled with top tips for training and fundraising.
The registration fee is £20 for the 22 mile walk and £10 for the five-mile walk, (£2.50 for children who must be over eight and accompanied by an adult). For further details and online registrations and payments, visit the website or email [email protected]">[email protected]
Once the registration is complete, entrants will receive a walker's pack outlining their start time and giving further details of the route. Participants can then begin collecting sponsorship pledges from friends, family and colleagues.
