THE ninth Tavistock Town Relay is fast approaching and it is time to get a team together and give the relay a go! The relay forms part of the Tavistock Carnival and is organised by Tavistock Athletic Club and sponsored by Abbey Garden Machinery. Last year, about 80 teams of four took part, with about 50 teams in the senior relay and 30 in the junior event. Food is available from the Lions Club barbecue, and the event supports the Tavistock Carnival charities. In 2007, £750 was raised. If you need some training or just like a good evening out, come down to the Meadows on July 17 — entrants can ask their business colleagues or club members to get a team together. With trophies for businesses and sports clubs there will be a chance to win a prize. Junior teams can win trophies at under 12, under 14 and under 16 levels. Entry forms can be downloaded from http://www.tavistockathletics.com">www.tavistockathletics.com or picked up on the night from the event centre at Meadowlands Pool from 5.30pm. The fun run starts at 6.30pm. It is open to all and is over a single 1.1-mile lap. Medals will be given to all finishers. The junior relay will start about 6.45pm and the senior event about 7.15pm. Each of the four team members run a circuit through the Meadows along either side of the Tavy, starting beside Meadowlands Pool and the Brooks tent, crossing the Tavy at Abbey Bridge and Westbridge. The runners are in view most of the time so team members and spectators can cheer their friends on around the course.
