AN exciting new vegetable garden share scheme is being pioneered in Tavistock — partnering enthusiastic gardeners with garden owners who are unable to use their property to its full potential. British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) and Tavistock Area Support Service (TASS) have together designed Tavistock Garden Share Alliance (TGSA). The project is being launched due to the popular demand for allotment space in the town — it is hoped it will also support some sectors of the community in their home environment. The scheme will also provide opportunity for people to practise horticulture in Tavistock and grow their own home-grown vegetables, herbs and flowers which can be shared between the partners. BTCV community project officer, Chris Avent, last year advertised locally in an attempt to locate some shared garden land, which would enable him to grow vegetables for his family. He said: 'It struck me that there are many homes in Tavistock which would traditionally have had space for growing vegetables. 'It benefits many people in the community to develop partnerships like this, and most of these benefits are about friendships and sharing skills. The produce is a bonus!' Tavistock resident Pearl Derges got in contact with Chris — and the partnership has blossomed ever since. Mrs Derges, 84, said she has never looked back since answering the advert. She said: 'I am really pleased I answered the advert. It takes a lot of worries off my mind and it is good to see the garden being used. Chris is an absolutely wonderful young man. I am so pleased I have done this. 'I strongly advise anyone who has a garden and can't use it to let these people take care of the garden.' Andy Lyle, general manager of TASS, said: 'This project is a wonderful opportunity where people can remain in their own homes and enjoy their gardens, whilst benefiting others who would not, if it wasn't for this project, have the opportunity to enjoy fresh vegetables and the pleasures of gardening.' The project is supported by Tavistock Town Council, West Devon Borough Council, Westden, 5 x 30 Project and Tavistock Council for Voluntary Service. Anyone who is interested in TGSA can apply for a questionnaire and information sheet. When a suitable partner becomes available, an induction will be carried out for each participant, introducing them to the scheme and TGSA's Code of Practice. There is a subscription fee of £25 for the year. To apply for a questionnaire and information sheet contact Mr Avent on 01822 613743 or email [email protected]">[email protected]
