OKEHAMPTON Deanery Bellringing Festival took place at Northlew this month. Seven towers were represented and it was a treat to hear them. Judges were Brian Drake and Robin Burnham and results were: Novice section: 1, Northlew (29.5); 2, Bridestowe (31.5), 3 Chagford (35); 4, Sampford Courtenay (40.5). Intermediate: 1, Chagford (33); 2, Exbourne (33.5). Main section: 1, Sampford Courtenay A (37.5); 2, Chagford A (39.5); 3, Chagford B (42); 4, South Tawton A (43); 5, Bridestowe (66.5); 6, Sampford Courtenay B (77); 7, South Tawton B (85.5). The ringers? service was conducted by the Vicar and the deanery secretary, Geoffrey Baker, presented shields and certificates. He thanked all who had taken part and those who worked to make the contest such a pleasure. Captain of the tower John Spry organised the event in Northlew and Mrs Spry and helpers served refreshments in the churchroom. The following rang for Northlew: Meg Way, Thomas Elliott, Cleve Thorne, Ernie Curtis, Shaun and John Millership. NORTHLEW Methodist Church Sunday School anniversary was celebrated on June 3/4. The service on Sunday was conducted by the Rev Paul Collings and on Monday the worship was led by Mrs Cathie Wagstaffe. Miss Brenda Curtis played for hymn singing, the theme for the weekend being ?Our friend, Jesus?. Scholars Ezmie Bolt, Katie Yelland and Beverley Tolley, assisted by their teachers, gave a lovely presentation at both services and this was much appreciated by the congregation. A faith supper, given by members and friends of the Chapel and convened by Mesdames O Yelland and J Friend, was enjoyed after the Monday service. Total proceeds from the weekend amounted to £226.55. Thanks were expressed to all who came and encouraged the children.
