LAST Friday, and not for the first time, totally irresponsible parking in Canal Road next to the Library, brought traffic in the town to a virtual halt, with queues stretching to the roundabout at Plymouth Road in one direction and well past the main Post Office in the other.
Rather than pay what are, after all, reasonably modest charges in the Bedford Car Park, someone had abandoned their car in the narrowest part of the road. This prevented a coach from reaching the coach park and, with cars following immediately behind, unable to manoeuvre either forwards or in reverse.
Not only were cars prevented from leaving the car park for quite a while, traffic wanting to turn into Canal Road caused a dramatic back-up in either direction.
It would seem eminently sensible ? which is probably why our illustrious council has not done anything ? to make the road beyond the rear entrance to the library a no parking, no setting down or picking up zone.
