WHITCHURCH seconds got back to winning ways on Saturday with a comfortable five-wicket victory over Cockington seconds in the Devon League.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Cockington openers made slow progress against accurate bowling from Matt Mills and Joel Heatley.
After Jones was run out for 22, wickets began to tumble regularly with only Dumont (43) showing any real resistance. Matt Mills was probably pick of the bowlers with 2 for 21 from 13 overs, although Ashley Woodrow also bowled a fine spell taking 3 for 26. Neil Tamblin (1 for 37) and Andy Alford (1 for 21) were the other wicket takers.
The Whitchurch openers made a good start before Steve Hodge was caught behind for 16 chasing a wide delivery from Stanlake. This brought Ian Gray to the crease to join fellow colt Ashley Woodrow, both of whom batted elegantly, picking off the bad balls and running well between the wickets.
After Woodrow was out for 32, Gavin Hall scored a quick 21 to take Whitchurch to the brink of victory. Although two more wickets fell the result was never in doubt and Whitchurch won with 5 wickets and 13 overs to spare.
Ian Gray again narrowly missed out on his first league half century finishing on 48 not out, despite Mark Mitchell?s gallant effort to give him the strike.
Whitchurch took 18 points, Cockington 4 points.
