SUPPORTERS of the old folk's rest room in Tavistock came

away from the planning committee meeting on July 22

encouraged but aware that the battle may not have been

won.

The developers may appeal against the rejection of their

plan. If they do the borough council will be put to great

expense defending their decision.

But, hopefully, Hunstete Estates have accepted that public

benefit and an historically important building outweighs

commercial advantage.

If, however, they persist in their desire to demolish the

building it will be possible to let them have their

commercial cake while preserving the building with its

public benefit.

This can be achieved by a body of trustees charged with

its management in perpetuity and with obtaining funds for

its purchase for Hunstete.

A second public subscription supported by the town

council and grants from regional and national

conservation bodies would be required.

This approach would have the added advantage of

relieving Tavistock ratepayers of the heavy though

partially discounted rent for the propery.

MAY we take this opportunity to applaud the speech and

support by Cllr Ted Sherrell at the planning meeting on

July 22?

Things were very bleak, until his support of the over 60s

rest room, and we are sure all users of the room would

like to thank him very much.

All his points were very true, the rest room must be

preserved and kept for the future users of the facility.
