TWO West Devon scouts will be whisked off to Sweden next year along with 40,000 other scouts from across the globe to take part in the 22nd World Scout Jamboree.

Nathan Turnock from the 1st Tavistock Scout Group, and Annabel Longden from the West Devon Explorer Unit have been selected as two of the 36 scouts chosen to represent Devon at the jamboree.

Annabel, 14, and Nathan, 13, both students at Tavistock College, had to attend a selection camp after submitting information about themselves.

Annabel said: 'We had to write a personal statement and then go to a selection camp weekend, where we were put through loads of different activities. They picked 36 out of the 80 Devon scouts at the camp.'

Nathan, Annabel and scouts from 216 countries around the world will enjoy a welcome party in Denmark where they will get a chance to meet each other, swap stories and share their experiences as scouts in different countries. At the end of their time in Denmark, the scouts will get into pairs and stay with host families.

Having won through the selection process, the next challenge for the scouts is to raise more than £2,000 to get them to the jamboree.

Nathan said he has already started trying to raise the funds: 'I've been writing to businesses to try to raise some money and to ask them to donate prizes for a raffle. I've also done two car boot sales and raised about £50 from that.'
