THE club flag flew at half mast over the Taw Meadow clubhouse as North Tawton remembered their much-respected Life Member Reg Fry, who had died the previous Monday.
Reg started playing at 15 and had been a lifelong supporter of the club. During his playing days he was a member of the club?s most successful team which won the Devon Junior Cup in four successive seasons between 1947 and 1951. Reg was vice-captain for the 1948-49 team, and continued to contribute to the club when his playing days were over. He was club president from 1980-1983.
A minute?s silence was observed by players and spectators before the kick-off.
Excellent tackling by Tawton?s Phil Wonnacott at flanker was to become a feature of the game, and the characteristically uncompromising play of Charles Ewen at fly half showed how determined Tawton were.
A resulting knock on by Tawton near their line tested their defence, but again the scrummaging was good and the ball was cleared upfield.
A neat grubber kick behind the defence by Ewen ended in a scrum on the visitors? line, from which Andy Pyle was able to drive over for the home side?s try; the conversion by Rofe was good.
Totnes were unlucky to lose a prop with a possible knee ligament injury, but were immediately back in the game. The visitors? only score before half time came from a Mark Harper penalty kick. This was again from near the half way line, and this time the Totnes scrum half was accurate, leaving the score at 10-3 to the home side.
Early in the second half Tawton?s Sion Rofe extended the lead with a long range penalty. Totnes responded well; two penalty moves took them to the Tawton line and Ben Nute crashed over for their first try near the right hand corner post. Another good kick by Harper converted the try to bring the sides level at 10-10.
Another successful penalty kick by Tawton?s Rofe was matched by one by Totnes ? the last scores of the game.
Man of the Match: Phil Wonnacott.
