WEST Devon Borough Council, Tavistock Swimming Club and Meadowlands Leisure Pool joined forces to organise the Tavistock and Area Inter-schools Swimming Gala this year. The event was open to all primary schools in the area. Tammy Messenger, West Devon Borough Council sports development officer, said: ?It was our third year and we attracted eight entries which was fantastic.? The annual event awards prizes to the overall large school winner, overall small school winner and to the school with swimmers showing the best display of sportsmanship throughout the event. Schools that entered a team this year were Tavistock Community Primary, Gulworthy, St Peters C of E Junior School, Mary Tavy and Brentor, Walkhampton, Whitchurch, Meavy and Milton Abbott. Taking the Tavistock Swimming Club Large Schools trophy was Tavistock Community Primary and the Small Schools winners were a delighted Gulworthy Primary. The Fair Play award went to Walkhampton Primary. Paul Chinn, Tavistock Swimming Club coach, and event coordinator said: ?It was great to see some top competition from our local primary school swimmers. ?Tavistock, Gulworthy and Milton Abbot fought a close battle throughout for the top three places, with only one point dividing Gulworthy and Milton Abbot in the overall places. ?The standard of swimming this year has improved at a rapid rate and I encouraged all children to get involved in a local club to continue their improvements.? Tammy added: ?A huge thank you must go to Debbie Mills and Paul Chinn as without their help the gala would not go ahead. Also thank you to the members of Tavistock Swimming Club Rachel, Wendy, Shelia, Chris and Amy for their contribution on the day.? The final results: Tavistock, Gulworthy, Milton Abbot, Meavy, St Peters, Whitchurch, Mary Tavy and Walkhampton.
