DEVON?S new schools? chief was in Okehampton recently to visit the community college as she continued her fact-finding tour of the county. Anne Whiteley, who became director of children and young people?s services in Devon earlier this year, met principal Daryll Chapman at the college. Mrs Whiteley was given a tour of the school, sat in on lessons and talked to pupils about various aspects of college life. This summer Okehampton College recorded its best ever GCSE and Key Stage 3 results. The percentage of students gaining five or more GCSEs at A* to C grade rose from 57 percent last year to just under 63% this year. The college was also praised by Ofsted inspectors for the outstanding care, guidance and support it provided for students. Inspectors said the college had made marked progress in the last six years and was a good college with outstanding features. The college?s technology status, which it gained three years ago, was also noted as having a positive impact on improving students? information and communication technology skills. Mrs Whiteley said: ?I am very keen to celebrate the college?s successes with Daryll Chapman and his staff and students at Okehampton and to hear their plans for the future.? Mrs Whitely will be calling on schools across the county over the coming months, but said her impressions of the college on this, her first visit, were good and she wanted to congratulate everyone connected to the college on some ?impressive? results. Mr Chapman said: ?It is good Anne is able to come and join us and share in the future vision of the college.? Mr Chapman said the college was hoping to met the criteria to achieve ?healthy school status?. This term, the college canteen has introduced new healthy ?Fresh Start? menus at lunch time and has taken chocolates, crisps and vending machines which sell fizzy drinks out of school.
