CHILDREN at Okehampton Primary School have signed a 'code of conduct' pledging they ride their scooters safely, after a special visit from two police community support officers last Thursday.
The school organised for PCSOs Danielle Moore-Dunstan and Lisa Smith from the Okehampton Neighbourhood Policing Team to visit the school and discuss with children the importance of scooter safety and riding around town responsibly.
Pupils shared their experiences of riding their scooters around town, and the officers gave them tips on how to ride more safely and sensibly.
Working together with headteacher Hazel Fox and the officers, children drew up a list of four rules to abide by when riding their scooters.
They each agreed to always wear a helmet, park scooters safely when entering shops, pay attention to traffic and their surroundings, and when riding on the pavement, dismount their scooters when they are encountered by pedestrians.
In return for promising to always wear a helmet, the school is considering investing in special lockers for children riding bikes and scooters to put their helmets in.
Headteacher Hazel Fox said: 'We want people to see children out and about in the fresh air, getting exercise and getting around and doing things that don't require getting in the car.
'Hopefully these rules will help people see children being responsible and playing safely, and help children ride sensibly.'
