DEVON'S mountain bike trials champion Andrei Burton demonstrated his cycling skills at Horrabridge Primary School on Tuesday, to celebrate the submission of the school's travel plan. The European number two mountain bike trials rider and cycle ambassador for Devon County Council promoted cycle safety at the school during an event attended by other school pupils in the area. Although he performed stunts and tricks in the school's morning assembly, the over-riding message was to wear a cycle helmet. Helmets were on sale at the school during and after the event to encourage all pupils who like to cycle to wear a helmet. Andrei said: 'Cycling is fun and it's great exercise but staying safe and wearing a helmet is all important when on two wheels. I wouldn't ride without one, it could save your life. I'm hoping we can generate a lot of interest in cycling among the children at Horrabridge Primary.' Headteacher Becky Crispin said she was delighted to welcome Andrei to the school as it celebrated cycle to school week. 'The activity supports our focus on staying healthy and staying safe and we are sure the children will be encouraged to develop their skills and enjoyment as well as their understanding of the need for safe cycling,' she said. Cllr Alan Hosking, Devon County Councillor for Yelverton Rural, said: 'It will be great for the children to be inspired by someone like Andrei, who has excelled at his sport to get them to think about their safety as well as enjoying cycling. 'And I hope the school will become even greener now it has submitted its travel plan.'
