IT'S time to don the wellies, loosen up the green fingers and celebrate in style as Okehampton Primary School prepares for a special event this weekend. The primary school's Wildlife Watch Group will officially open the school's environmental area on Saturday. An exciting day is planned which will run from 1pm until 4pm. There will be a Dartmoor Ranger leading a minibeast hunt, craft activities with Mrs Recycle, nature quiz orienteering, an environmental art animation workshop and music making. Really Wild Show TV presenter, Nick Baker, is hoping to pledge his support by coming along to the day. The event is for children and adults but the under 8s must be accompanied by an adult. There is no charge but places should be booked in advance. To book contact Fran Rickwood on 01837 659533. Extensive work and exciting developments have taken place throughout the past year after the primary school secured a £9,500 grant from The Big Lottery Fund, Breathing Places award. The works include the building of a boardwalk and pond dipping platform, a French drain and a willow tunnel. The wildlife area now boasts footpaths, stepping stones and security fencing. Support has been given to the project by the Sticklepath and Okehampton Conservation Group while Okehampton Rotary Club helped to fund and build a new shed. There are now plans for a remote camera, bird boxes and a sensory area.
