AN association formed to 'preserve and beautify' Tavistock Parish Church was launched at Tavistock Town Hall recently — among guests at the Friends of Saint Eustachius inaugural event were local town councillors, members of the church's congregation and well-wishers.
After wine and canapes, consumed to the rousing sound of the Stannary Brass Band, those present were welcomed by friends chairman Capt Ian Jenkins, RN, who was introduced by the vicar of Saint Eustachius, Preb John Rawlings.
Capt Jenkins said the aim of the friends was 'to form an association of like-minded people who, for whatever their personal reasons, wish to keep in contact with the church, though they may not be regular churchgoers — perhaps they were married at the church or had children baptised there, or might be keen to see the beauty and history of the place preserved for future generations.'
Those who enrolled as friends were given a welcome pack which included a history of the church, a lapel badge showing the emblem of Saint Eustachius, a prayer card and a letter of welcome giving details of future events.
The emblem — a stag with a cross between its antlers — was echoed in the theme of an imaginative floral centrepiece on display in the hall. The stag represents the vision that Saint Eustachius saw at his conversion.
There were also photographic displays of the church, and cases of Saint Eustachius wine — which are now on sale to the public. The reception ended with guests being treated to two anthems by the parish church choir.
Capt Jenkins added that this was only the beginning for the friends: 'We would like to welcome many more people to join with us at our special service in the church on the Sunday closest to Saint Eustachius' Day, which this year is September 23.'
Plans will be publicised in the summer newsletter and on the website: http://www.friendstavistock.freeserve.co">www.friendstavistock.freeserve.co uk
