IT would be an understatement to say I was saddened when I read your article concerning the fencing off of Crandford Brook in the sporting green at Bridestowe.

Both my children have grown up in Bridestowe and have had great fun building dams in the stream and swimming, I even helped them on a few occasions.

It should also be pointed out that safety of toddlers is a parent?s responsibility, not the local authority?s. I feel that the expression of concern over safety has more to do with the need for the po-faced do-gooders? wish to confine our children to indoors, where they wrongly assume that they will be less at risk.

To my knowledge these so-called dams have never caused any flooding anyway. I wonder if the people who express these nonsensical concerns might not be better off moving to Slough or Guildford where there are already lots of nice fences for them to admire. If this fence gets built, I sincerely hope that the kids will climb over it and continue to have fun in the stream, and good luck to them.
