NEW road markings announced by Devon County Council this week could help improve pedestrian safety at a Horrabridge trouble spot.
The new markings are expected to be in place before Christmas and will clearly show the pedestrian right of way along the frontage of the Manor Garage and Manor Cars.
Residents have complained about being forced to walk in the busy A386 because of cars parked outside the garage forecourts.
West Devon Borough councillor Sally Monk and Devon councillor Gretta Madigan have been pressing for action before a serious accident occurs.
'This is very welcome for pedestrians walking along the A386,' said Mrs Monk.
'They have been concerned about their personal safety when they have to walk in between the flow of vehicles along this very busy road to get around the parked vehicles on the forecourt.'
A spokesman from the county council said the proprietors of the businesses, Stephen Badge and Mike Williamson, had both agreed the pedestrian markings should be laid across their adjoining forecourts along the established pedestrian right of way.
He said the police would be ensuring the markings were complied with.
Mrs Madigan said: 'This is a wonderful example of how partnerships can be developed to overcome issues that are of importance to a local community.
'I'm very pleased the proprietors of Manor Cars and Manor Garage have agreed to become directly involved in promoting pedestrian safety along their frontage. It's good to note that local businesses are willing to help out within their local community.'
