DESPITE the cold and windy conditions, and a downpour just after the start, all 45 competitors completed the recent testing four mile Tavistock Athletic Club Handicap Race over Whitchurch Down. Junior members of the club did particularly well, with Nick Champion winning in 39 minutes 8 seconds (actual time after handicap deducted 31.08), and Tom Lawson second in 41.39 (actual time an outstanding 26.39). Third, and keeping up his record of never missing a Handicap Race over 20 years was Llew Jones in 42 minutes. Laura Aspen kept up the Junior challenge being the first female member home in 45 minutes 16 seconds (actual 33.16). It was good to see several former members of the club take part as well as friends and relatives with Richard Joughin first non member home in 5th and Kirsty Trotter the first lady home in 11th. The winner of the Tavy 7, Emerson Combstock, also took part but was heavily penalised so he was unable to make it a ?double? although he did post the fastest time of 22 minutes 58 seconds. The faster athletes in the club also found the going tough and will wish to see the handicap times for the youngsters increased next year. Special mention should be made of new member Rachel Short who braved the weather in a grass skirt and won the Fancy Dress competition. After a session with the photographer, it was over to the Halfway House for sausages and chips and the prizegiving. An excellent end for an outstanding year for the club which welcomes runners of all abilities.
