THE culmination of 12 months of fundraising for a cancer charity by the Tavistock Town Band —incorporating Tavistock Versatile Brass Ensemble — will be ending on a high note on Friday, September 12, when they take part in a special 'Last Night of the Proms' concert.

The band will be making a sizable donation to the Mustard Tree cancer support centre at Derriford Hospital when its annual proms concert takes place at Tavistock Wharf.

They will be joined by Stonehouse Brass from Plymouth, recognised as one of the best brass bands in the region, who will be playing old Prom favourites such Pomp and Circumstance March number one, Jerusalem and the Sea Songs.

And local soprano Rosemary Turner will be joining in with her solo in Rule Britannia.

The Plymouth Gilbert and Sullivan Fellowship and Cornish choir Canoryon Lowen will add their talents to the musical evening.

Concert promoter Chris Northey will be making some special arrangements for the Tavistock Versatile Brass Ensemble.

Chris said: 'There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of the Last Night of the Proms in Tavistock.

'Our format has been much copied throughout the South West but none of them can quite match our original.

'This is a chance for you to wave your flags, laugh, cry, sing your heart out, whistle, clap, stamp your feet and let your hair down. Come wave a Union Jack or ever wear one. Be eccentric, be British!'

Tickets, priced £10 for adults and £7.50 for children, are available from the Wharf box office on 01822 611166.
