A £239,000 SCHEME to make a West Devon accident blackspot safer is due to be started at the end of this month. The new roundabout at Gulworthy Cross, by the parish primary school, is to be constructed by Devon County Council and follows extensive consultation with Gulworthy Parish Council, local residents and the school. The work will involve constructing a raised roundabout, lit using low light polluting street lights. A short section of the A390 will be moved to bring it into line with the new roundabout, the design of which minimises the amount of land needed. It will be screened by existing trees, but additional landscaping and planting will also be carried out. Work on the scheme is due to start on January 30 and last about eight weeks ? however, some of the construction will be weather-dependent and the scheme could be delayed during periods of heavy rain. During construction, two-way traffic on the A390 will be maintained as far as possible, although there will be certain periods when one-way traffic will be necessary, which will be controlled by temporary traffic lights. Cllr Roy Connelly, Tavistock?s county member, said: ?This is wonderful news. I have been working for some time with Gulworthy residents to make this scheme a reality. ?It is really encouraging that the safety concerns of the locality have been responded to so readily by the county. ?It was the serious issues put forward by the whole community of Gulworthy that identified Gulworthy Cross as a high priority road scheme in West Devon.? Work on the roundabout is being co-ordinated with other works in the Gunnislake area, where a one-week total closure is being planned by South West Water. This will be followed by highway maintenance work between Gulworthy and New Bridge at Gunnislake, which will necessitate the closure of the bridge over the Tamar from 9.15am until 3.30pm. Road signs will be erected to give advance warning of the dates for the closure.
