IF YOU fancy doing something to help your community, plus gain a whole new host of friends and interests in the process, Okehampton Rotary Club could be just what you're looking for.

The club is looking for some new blood to take this organisation, which has one million members worldwide, into the future.

'It's all about fellowship and fun,' said club press officer Russ Thomas. 'We have social events, evening and lunchtime meetings with interesting speakers and plenty of opportunities to help local, national and international causes.'

Mr Thomas said today's young professionals were different from years ago and the rotary club was trying to move with the times to attract them.

'We do still have lunchtime meetings in the White Hart, but we realise that many young people today do not have time for a lunch break so there are many other ways of getting involved with the club,' he said.

The club is heavily involved with Okehampton Show where it mans the entrance gates and a May Fair and Duck Race is the main fundraiser for the year.

As part of Rotary International it is trying to eradicate polio throughout the world and it has raised £2,000 so far this year for the New Okehampton Hospital Appeal.

On top of this, Okehampton Rotary Club has helped the area's young sport stars with sponsorship, funded senior citizens' trips and Christmas train trips, initiated the Youth Speaks competition which encourages youngsters to become more confident and provided grants to various charities, including Home Start.
