A TOP class junior rower from Tavistock has received a big helping hand to achieve his sporting dreams. Great Britain junior rower Charles Brereton, 18, has been awarded a grant by the Rotary Club of Tavistock in association with SportsAid South West. The Rotary Club of Tavistock has agreed to match the charity?s award, giving Charles a combined sum of £500 to help him with coaching, travel, training and equipment costs in his chosen sport. SportsAid is a charity working to help talented young and disabled sportspersons compete at the highest levels in their chosen sports. Awards are given to competitors who are currently ranked in the top ten nationally of their sport or are regular members of national age group squads. Rotary, nationally, seeks to support the celebration of achievements by young people and considers this to be an excellent way to assist talented sportspersons from their locality to fulfil their dreams. Charles is a member of the Great Britain Under 18 rowing team. He was a member of the winning 8s at the National Rowing Championships in 2005 and was on the 8s team at the World Junior Rowing Championships last season when the team came eighth in the U18 category. He is currently competing at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. The award was presented to Charles by the Rotary Club at the Cornish Arms in Tavistock on Monday.
