YEE-HAW — one lucky varmint from Moretonhampstead is to become 'town sheriff' as part of a raffle with a difference. To coincide with the visit of the touring production of Jez Butterworth's award winning play Jerusalem on Friday, June 20, the promoters Green Hill Arts and Heritage Centre have recreated the role of sheriff of the town. It will be awarded as top prize in the town raffle. Locals are clamouring for tickets as they try to win the honour that goes with the shiny sheriff badge, handcrafted by local blacksmith Greg Abel. The bearer of the badge will be afforded the humorous list of rights from midsummer 2014 to midsummer 2015: the right to appoint five deputies, the right to parade their cats in the town square on a Sunday, the right to wear denim on denim, the right to stand on any street corner in town looking important, the right to hold a boot sale in their garden, the right to browse in all Moretonhampstead's shops and leave without buying anything, and the right to tether their horse outside the pub. As payment for fulfilling the role of town sheriff, the lucky winner will be given a free pint of ale or a shot of whisky in The Horse pub and a free sausage roll from butcher Michael Howard on the first Monday of each month. To claim their payment, the sheriff must be wearing their badge, and address the bartender or butcher in the following way: 'I am the sheriff of this town and I claim my pint of Proper Job/sausage roll, thank you pilgrim.' Organisers have deemed anyone from outside the parish boundaries is eligible to win, except varmints from nearby town Chagford. Tickets for this incredible raffle are available from the town information centre. The draw will take place on Friday June 20 during the interval of the play in the Sentry. Tickets for the play, which are £10 or £8, are available at Moretonhampstead Newsagents, online from the Exeter Northcott, and Green Hill Arts. The play will be proceeded by two hours of live music by local bands with a bar, hog roast and veggie curries, a barista coffee trader and entertainment. Other raffle prizes include two tickets to see Welsh National Opera, two tickets for Chagstock, two tickets for Go Ape, pizza for two and a bottle of wine at The Horse, cream tea at The White Hart, and cream tea at Bovey Castle.
