ORGANISERS of a fast-growing and explosive hobby in the Okehampton area are hoping an event being held next month will go off with a bang — and raise vital funds for Devon hospices.

SWARM (South West Amateur Rocketry Membership) are holding an open club meeting during the weekend of September 14 and 15 at Follygate Airfield, where members and anyone new to the art of rocket making can learn more about the craft.

The weekend kicks off with a 'rock-it' disco at Okehampton Rugby Club on Friday September 13 — then the action turns skywards as rockets of all sizes are launched from the airfield during the weekend.

Jim Lennie, of SWARM, is now one of the most highly qualified rocket launchers in the country and can get involved with the largest rockets.

He said a wide range of rockets would be released during the open weekend.

'We've got three really large ones coming, a two-stage rocket called Thunder and Lightning, our pterodactyl rocket which was on TV recently, and a replica of a patriot missile, which is about 11ft tall.'

Jim said SWARM now had around 80 members, with a thriving Junior Beehive club for the under 16s.

Visitors to the weekend will be able to see the rockets at close hand, although they will be moved to a safe distance for the actual launches.

'There'll be plenty for people to see, displays, and one of the largest rocketry shops in the UK will be coming,' he said.

Representatives of SWARM's sponsors, Manchester-based Starchaser, will be at the open day with information about their projects, while experienced rocketry expert Pete Davy, the range safety officer for the weekend, will be bringing various rocketry goodies.

Rocket enthusiasts from clubs in other areas are also attending the weekend, which has been generously sponsored by Taw Valley Creamery.

During the evening of September 14, a variety show will be held at 7.30pm in North Tawton Town Hall, with the aim of boosting funds for Devon hospices.

The weekend finishes with a club visitors' launch meeting at the airfield.

Strict safety rules will be observed throughout the weekend with all launches complying with UK Rocketry Association guidance.
