THE Westcountry Rivers Trust is a finalist in a South West RDA green business award.

The trust, based at Lifton, is in line for a 'Hand in Hand' award — the award celebrates businesses and organisations which have demonstrated economic success and improving the environment can go hand in hand.

Set up in 1995 to protect and enhance the region's rivers and streams, the trust works closely with farmers, rural businesses and the wider community in each river catchment. It provides education, and targets technical advice and assistance to improve land and river management.

Arlin Rickard, director of the trust, said they were thrilled to win their Hand in Hand category and were excited at being a national finalist. 'This award gives an important pat on the back to all the farmers and businesses we have worked with.

'Our projects have shown conclusively that the finest food, sound business and a healthy environment can indeed go Hand in Hand,' she said.

Brian Wilson, minister for energy and construction, announced the finalists at the launch of the South West's Renewable Energy Strategy at Bath.

Other finalists included Devon County Council — with its 'Life in the Bus Lane' project to encourage young people to use buses instead of cars, and 'Solar Devon and Salzburg' renewable energy project — and South Hams District Council.
