TAVISTOCK College GCSE PE students were this term given the opportunity to learn out of the classroom when they attended a revision residential run by the PE department.

The aim was to revise as much of the syllabus as possible in a way that students would find inspiring and memorable a month before their final exams.

Utilising the facilities of the activity centre, Skern Lodge in North Devon, 30 students and three members of staff spent an intense 24 hours combining some 'wacky' and some more normal ways to revise the main components of the GCSE curriculum.

Whether it was balloon blowing with head of PE Tristan Forster, tug of war with Mrs Kath Powell or 'SPORT' and 'FITT' with Shaun Hulbert, the students were given a variety of ways to approach both the content and the examination of the course.

Mr Forster said: 'It was important for us to take the students out of their comfort zone and I think there is real value in the students seeing us out of ours.

All the students got something out of the two days that will help them with their exams.'

The students ranged in abilities and confidence in the subject, but the ways that the sessions were managed and structured meant all could have their say and develop in areas they had previously found difficult.

Mr Forster added: 'We are hoping to make this an annual event for our GCSE students, as well as utilising the activity centre for our new courses on offer such as the Sport and Public Services BTEC courses.'
