I WAS taken aback last Friday, to see in Bedford Square a number of identical cars of a foreign make spread across the area in front of the town hall.

As I failed to find anyone to give an explanation for this display, I rang up the town clerk's office on my return home. I was informed that during carnival week the Square was in the care of the Lions' Club; and that as a result of the display, some money would accrue to their funds. I am astonished.

The perpetrators of the New Look expressed horror at the sight of cars parked outside the town hall. So spreading cars across the present pedestrian area is okay?

But is it also okay for coaches to be prevented from dropping off visitors in Bedford Square? Perhaps we are glad that some are taken to Princetown instead? And what about market traders' vehicles being denied access?

I suggest that the time has come for the council to review its policy regarding the treatment and use of the handsome historic centre of our town.
