THE Tavistock Times/Gazette Cup was kindly donated by the paper in 1980, following Jack Davey?s retirement from county cricket. Jack joined Gloucestershire CCC in 1966 , where he remained until 1979, playing alongside South Africa?s Mike Procter and Pakistan?s Zaheer Abbas and Sadiq Mohammad, not forgetting North Devon?s international umpire and Tavistock vice president David Shepherd. The trophy was in recognition of his contribution to cricket in the West Devon area. Jack had also worked for the Gazette as a trainee printer from 1960 to 1966. Both Jack?s father and grandfather had long associations with the club as secretaries in the 60s and the 30s. The trophy was played for from 1980 to the mid nineties between Tavistock and a West Devon select side, and returns this Sunday (July 17) at 2.30pm when the home club entertain the Tamar Cavaliers led by Gordon Littlejohns. Long time friend and Tavistock CC president Stuart Munday said that Jack is hoping to attend the game. The trophy will be presented to the winning captain.
