A THRIVING group for retired people in the Tavistock area is on the lookout for a few more members to join its lively band.

Tavistock and District Forum meets once a month on a Thursday, when guest speakers give talks and there is time for a social get together.

The forum has around 100 members and so varied and interesting are regular meetings that between 60 to 80 of those members make them a special date for their diary.

Jeff Castrey, programme secretary for the forum, said: ?Some recent talks have been about visits to Vietnam, India?s Kulu Valley, the history of weaving, the future for farming and food supplies and Devonport Naval Museum.

?Topics later this year will include Peninsula Medical School, planning public transport for Devon and Cornwall and residential schools for children with special needs.?

Mr Castrey said the monthly meetings were ?only part of the secret? of the success of Tavistock Forum.

For example, every Monday, there are guided moorland walks ending with lunch. In the winter, there are music and poetry groups which meet in members? homes.

There are also summer outings and every spring, a four-day walking holiday is organised in the Westcountry.

Any retired person interested in joining Tavistock and District Forum can find out more by calling the secretary on 01822 618090.
