WORMS and waste may not sound like an ideal combination, but for one local group they are the answer to a recycling nightmare.

Mental health recovery service, Rethink, which operates from Abbey Rise in Tavistock, has been trying to improve its environmental friendliness with a number of recycling schemes.

The latest has involved raising money to provide the Tavistock Day Services centre with a compost and wormery container to recycle kitchen waste and garden rubbish.

Scraps of food and waste are now put into the compost bin to reduce the amount of rubbish and, eventually, to provide a rich source of compost for the garden.

Matt Parkins, community mental health worker, said: ?The compost bin has set off interesting conversations about the wider issues of recycling and will also help the flowers and wildlife in the garden.?

The Rethink group holds a weekly cooking session in the services kitchen where members plan and cook a meal before sitting down to enjoy it together.

The compost project has also received backing from the Environment Agency?s Action Earth scheme which funded it.
