I ENTIRELY agree with the plans for Tavistock's Bedford Square, proposed by Tony Bates, in your letters page. His ideas are quite brilliant, and deserve to be considered.

The letter was obviously written 'tongue in cheek'. As the Bedford Square Tony describes, is the Bedford Square we had before Devon County Council vandalised it.

Four lanes of traffic across the square would do much to ease queues that currently stretch the length of Plymouth Road throughout most of the day. Tavistock shopkeepers suffer because many people refuse to join the queue and opt instead to shop at Safeway where parking is convenient and free of charge.

It was predicted that throngs of people would fill the new square, and it would become the vibrant heart of the town. This hasn't happened, the square remains a granite desert, criss-crossed by dangerous drainage gullies.

So, I suggest Devon Highways Committee should swallow their pride, admit their mistake and restore 'The Square' to its previous traffic-friendly state.
