PEOPLE have been warned to be vigilant after conmen posing as utility workers struck in Winkleigh. Two men visited a house in Old Chapel Gardens, Winkleigh, and told the householder the water supply to the house had to be cut off and they needed to check pipework in the house. The men called at lunchtime on Tuesday, August 1, and are believed to have struck again later in the afternoon in Torrington. One of the men went into the house but was followed at all times by the householder and eventually left empty-handed. When he went outside he met up with another man and they left the area. Around an hour later, another incident occurred where a man visited a home in Torrington again claiming to be a utility worker, again nothing was stolen. PC Sally Middleton, neighbourhood beat manager for Winkleigh said: ?We are warning all residents to be vigilant of suspicious individuals and vehicles and to contact police with any information they may have.?
