THE need for more affordable housing and increased availability of locally produced food are two issues which West Devon residents feel should be top of the agenda, according to a new district-wide survey.
The Action for the Future survey undertaken by environmental charity WestDEN aims to find out people?s concerns about the long-term quality of life and the environment in the district, so that WestDEN can set up projects and work with other organisations to provide solutions.
Already WestDEN has received scores of replies following a stall at Tavistock Farmers Market.
WestDEN?s consultation co-ordinator Jeanette Emmett said: ?We hope many more people will give their views so that WestDEN can find out what really matters to people in this district.
?Following the previous consultation eight years ago many projects were set up to help improve the environment and the long-term quality of life, from pond-life diversity projects, to school walking bus initiatives and current projects such as the scooter project and rural skills training.?
Initial feedback from the new survey showed many people were concerned at the lack of affordable housing for local people and the number of second or holiday homes in the district. Many people also wanted to see more local produce available and improved public transport.
However there was also a very wide variety of issues raised including light pollution, more alternative energy schemes, lack of facilities for young people, too much new housing, the threat to rarer species such as the skylark, the need for more NHS dentists, a cycle track to Plymouth, and the need to support Fair Trade.
WestDEN warn that our current lifestyles are not sustainable with waste, traffic and the number of species of wildlife under threat all major concerns.
It is hoped thousands of people across West Devon will fill in the survey, giving their views and ideas. Everyone who responds will be entered into a draw to win a luxury hamper of local food.
Survey forms are available from the WestDEN offices at 5 Canal Road, Tavistock, call 01822 611487 or can be filled in online through the website: http://www.actionforthefuture.com">www.actionforthefuture.com and all completed forms will be entered into the draw.
Community groups or organisations that would like WestDEN to talk about sustainability and the Action for the Future consultation should also get in touch on the number above.
