CONCERNS were raised at a parish meeting on Tuesday night over a plan for 37 new homes at Petrockstowe, which would dramatically increase the size of the village.
Around 50 residents turned up to the meeting in the Baxter Hall called by Petrockstowe Parish Council to find out the views of the community.
A major increase in traffic and a stretch on local services such as the school were the main concerns about the planning application by Millwood Homes of Newton Abbot.
The housing company has outline permission for development at the central Town Land site but the total number of houses was unknown when it was granted approval in October 1998.
Petrockstowe currently has around 100 homes and parish clerk Anne Johnston said local people were of the opinion that 37 more was a lot for a small village.
'Locals feel it would change the character of the village and they are worried about the extra traffic it would generate,' she said.
'The main feeling from the meeting was that people were against a development as large as this and we will be putting their views forward to the district council.'
Managing director of Millwood Homes Alastair Salt, who attended the meeting to answer questions, said the company was aiming at the first-time buyer market and the housing being proposed was two and three-bedroomed properties.
'Starter homes and first family homes are very hard to find especially in Petrockstowe which has mainly larger houses and bungalows,' he said.
House prices are expected to start at just over £60,000 and rise to almost £80,000 for the three-bedroomed homes.
A decision on the plan will be determined at the end of November.
